Global Prime Updates

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA — Combat sports in Sri Lanka are about to hit the global stage. Today, MAIN Championship officially announced the country’s first-ever international Muay Thai fight night, scheduled for August 9, 2026, at the BMICH in Colombo.

This landmark event represents a defining moment for the nation’s sports landscape, bringing a full-scale, internationally produced fight night to Sri Lankan soil for the very first time.

A World-Class Spectacle in Colombo

The championship will feature 11 professional bouts, bringing together elite local and international athletes. Produced to world-class standards, the event will showcase high-impact LED staging and live-stream broadcast capabilities. An exclusive audience of over 1,000 guests, including more than 150 VVIPs, is expected to attend the historic night.

To foster both immediate talent and long-term growth, the fight card will be split into two divisions:

  • Senior Professional Bouts: Contested over three rounds of three minutes.
  • Junior Bouts: Contested over three rounds of two minutes, giving rising young athletes a legitimate, sanctioned stage early in their careers.

More Than a Fight: Building a Legacy

MAIN Championship is designed to be a structured platform that creates lasting opportunities. Beyond the ring, the initiative builds competitive pathways for Sri Lankan athletes to train, compete, and gain international recognition. It is also set to boost the local economy by generating employment across production, media, promotion, and sports management.

“MAIN Championship was founded to take Sri Lanka’s combat sports to the global stage. We aim to create a platform that provides real opportunity for athletes and brands to grow consistently through world-class event experiences.” — Lankesh Rupasinghe, Founder of MAIN Championship

National Backing and Global Horizons

The event carries the official endorsement of the Sri Lanka Muay Thai Federation (SLMTF), underscoring its significance for national youth development and its potential to position Sri Lanka as a premier destination for sports tourism.

The Colombo event is just the beginning. MAIN Championship has already confirmed that its next major event will be held overseas, bringing Sri Lankan athletes and the homegrown brand to the international arena.
